1. Calculate the Moon's true sidereal longitude using Swiss Ephemeris or Lahiri Ayanamsa.
2. Divide the longitude by 13°20' (13.3333°) — the quotient gives the nakshatra index (0–26).
3. The remainder, divided by 3°20', gives the pada (quarter) from 1 to 4.
4. Each pada maps to specific starting syllables for the Hindu naming ceremony (Naamkaran).

Our nakshatra calculator uses the Swiss Ephemeris astronomical library (when available on the server) with Lahiri Ayanamsa to compute the Moon's precise sidereal longitude for your birth moment. The calculation accounts for the Moon's daily motion of approximately 12–15 degrees and interpolates to your exact birth time in IST (Indian Standard Time). When Swiss Ephemeris is unavailable, we fall back to a high-accuracy Meeus algorithm approximation. The result includes your janma nakshatra, pada number (1–4), corresponding baby name letters, Moon rashi (the zodiac sign containing your nakshatra), and nakshatra lord planet. For enhanced accuracy, always provide your exact birth time from your birth certificate or hospital records.
