Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Rahu Kalam?
- Rahu Kalam (Rahu Kaal) is a daily ~90-minute period ruled by the shadow planet Rahu, considered inauspicious for starting new ventures, journeys, weddings or financial deals. Routine ongoing work may continue.
- How is Rahu Kalam calculated?
- The time between sunrise and sunset is divided into 8 equal parts. Rahu occupies a fixed part per weekday: Monday 2nd, Saturday 3rd, Friday 4th, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Tuesday 7th and Sunday 8th part. Because it depends on actual sunrise/sunset, timings differ by city and season.
- What are Yamagandam and Gulika Kalam?
- They are the other two inauspicious daily periods — Yamagandam (ruled by Yama) is avoided for auspicious starts, while Gulika Kalam (son of Saturn) is specifically avoided for anything you don't want repeated (like funerals). Gulika is fine — even good — for some routine tasks in South Indian tradition.
- What is Abhijit Muhurat?
- The middle 1/15th of the day (around local noon) is Abhijit — a naturally auspicious window that neutralises many doshas. When you can't find a proper muhurat, Abhijit is the traditional safe choice (except on Wednesdays in some traditions).
