A tithi is a lunar day — the time the Moon takes to move 12° ahead of the Sun. There are 15 tithis in the waxing (Shukla) fortnight and 15 in the waning (Krishna) fortnight, ending in Purnima and Amavasya respectively.

Why does tithi matter for festivals and vrats?

Almost every Hindu festival and fast follows the tithi, not the English date — Ekadashi vrat on the 11th tithi, Chaturthi for Ganesha, Purnima for satyanarayan puja. Knowing today's tithi tells you today's observances.

Which tithis are auspicious for new work?

Generally Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Trayodashi are favoured; Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya are avoided for new beginnings. Combine with the day's choghadiya for timing.
